I wanted to be a part of this student chapter mainly due to the interest I had for the aim of this project. As someone who enjoys books, I felt that being able to empower youths through books would be a meaningful initiative. I enjoyed mentoring kids in reading sessions and helping them overcome their struggle with reading. Being able to raise awareness of this in St Nicks seemed like a great opportunity for me to give back to our society and promote a good cause.
Helping out in BooktheChance has allowed me to attend the mentoring session where i was able to interact with young children by reading with and interacting with them. I think this was a meaningful experience as we were able to keep the kids company as well as help them develop their reading skills when we read together with them. some of the kids needed a little more help so i would read out loud to them and let them repeat after me so they could familiarize themselves with the words.
Starting a student chapter has indeed been meaningful. I have learnt how to work with my team members so as to raise funds and make this project possible. furthermore, I have learnt how to interact with young children during the mentoring session. I had alot of fun reading and interacting with the children! the experience has been really enriching and I would love to help out in similar projects in the future!
As part of our student chapter, we volunteered at a partner organisation, FaithActs is certainly meaningful to us as we are able to play a part in the children’s literacy journey. We hope these sessions has aided them to develop a greater interest in reading. It was our joy to spend time reading to the children and engaging them in activities!
